he Valar are the gods of Middle-Earth. They were the offspring of Eru Ilúvatar's thoughts, Eru being The One. When he created them, he called them the Ainur, the Holy Ones. I chose to give the more important--or at least the more often referenced--Valar their own pages, while grouping some of the lesser known Valar on to one page.
The Valar are comprable to the gods of Greek or Roman mythology in that the people of the world turned to them in their troubles and prayed to them for help in dark times. The Valar loved the peoples of Middle-Earth, especially the Elves, who were given immortality and allowed to sail West when they had tired of Middle-earth. They then could rest in the West of the West, in the Undying lands with the Valar. The Valar were each given different gifts by Eru, and they used these gifts when creating the world and making it ready for the Children of Ilúvatar--Elves and Men. This section goes through each of the most important Valar and what he or she controlled or loved the most in the world. The most important of the Valar was Manwë; he was married to Varda, also called Elbereth Queen of the Stars. Aulë, Yavanna, Ulmo, and the evil Melkor (Morgoth) were also extremely important to the shaping of the world and the well (or ill) being of those in it.
