anwë is dearest to Ilúvatar and understands his purposes most clearly. As time went on, he was appointed to be the first of all Kings, the lord of Arda and all who dwelt within it.

"In Arda his delight is in the winds and the clouds, and in all the regions of the air, from the heights to the depths, from the utmost borders of the Veil of Arda to the breezes that blow in the grass." 1 He is also given the name Súlimo, Lord of the Breath of Arda. He loves all swift, strong birds, and the come and go at his bidding.

The race of Eagles belong to Manwë, and they were created in the Music of the Ainur, when his song and that of Yavanna mingled, and their thoughts rose like winged birds, soaring above the heavens. The Eagles would live in the mountains of Aulë, looking down upon all the world, far-seeing as Manwë himself. The knowledge of the Eagles appeased Yavanna after the creation of the Dwarves who would little love the things she loved, but what appeased her more was Manwë's telling of the Shepherds of the Trees that would walk the forests and protect the things that grew from the steel bite of the Dwarves' axes. Any reader of The Lord of the Rings know these Shepherds as Ents, and Fangorn is their chief.
